Self-study route (~$70–$150): Study free through the FOA's Fiber U platform, then pay the exam fee. Total cost can be under $100. If the certification adds even $2/hour to your pay, it pays for itself in the first week of work.
In-person course route ($650–$2,000): A 3–5 day intensive at an FOA-approved school, mostly hands-on. Even at the high end, a $3/hour bump repays a $2,000 course in about four months — and you get hands-on splicing practice that itself increases your value.
How certified techs climb from $72K to $100K+
The CFOT is the floor of the certified track, not the ceiling. Here's how pay progresses as certified techs add specializations:
Add splicing (CFOS/S or on-the-job): Splicing specialists average around $73,000–$80,000, with reported ranges reaching $100,000+ at the 75th percentile. Fusion splicing is the single highest-value skill addition.
Add testing/maintenance (CFOS/T): Techs who can run and interpret OTDR traces professionally move into certification testing roles — reading an OTDR trace and finding a fault miles down a line is what separates installers from specialists.
Go where certified techs are scarce: Data center fiber roles pay certified specialists a median around $70,200, with senior certified specialists earning $95,000–$135,000+. The big tech employers pay the top of that band.
Eventually, go independent: Experienced certified splicers doing 1099 contract work bill $400–$800/day on project work — a completely different earnings tier that's only accessible with the certified, specialized skill set.
